Organic Whole Sumac - Spices and Condiments

What is grain sumac? It is a raw spice. Sumac comes from a shrub that produces red clusters containing small seeds. These seeds are ground to create this naturally salty, lemony, and vinegary spice. Depending on individual palates, some will recognize the lemony flavor while others may be more sensitive to the vinegary taste. This spice also has an astringent quality. Be careful, as there are trees of the same family in France and Europe called "poison sumac": this one is toxic! Usage: The flavor and color of our grain sumac will therefore last longer. You can also grind it on demand using a mortar and pestle or a grinder. We recommend using sumac as a condiment and not cooking it so that it retains all its properties and flavor.
