Rod Seals

Rod seals ensure sealing during the linear movement of piston rods in cylinder heads. A rod seal system consists of a rod seal and a pre-seal or just a rod seal. For heavy-duty applications, rod seal systems that combine both types of seals are typically used; in this case, the pre-seal is positioned between the rod seal and the piston in the cylinder head. Depending on the profile and the required component characteristics, a rod seal can be made from a single material or from multiple materials. Typical materials for the sealing and pre-tensioning elements of rod seals include thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR). For the support rings of rod seals, polyamide (PA), polyacetal (POM), or PTFE is usually used.
