NESS Nitrogen Overlay - Protection Against Oxidation and Reduction of Fire Hazard

Both mineral and synthetic heat transfer oils oxidize at temperatures above 80 °C when exposed to air. The oxidation leads to tar-like decomposition products in the oil, which can clog dirt traps, pipelines, and heat exchangers. The oxidation products increase the acidity of the oil, which can lead to corrosion, especially in the collection tank, expansion vessel, and overflow line. The expansion vessel is particularly at risk if it has an open connection to the atmosphere. Light hydrocarbons can form an explosive mixture with air in the expansion and collection vessel. A nitrogen overlay prevents this, as the oxygen in the system is replaced by nitrogen.
