The felting process enhances and multiplies the natural properties of merino wool. The fine scale layer of the wool opens up under the effect of heat, and the fibers intertwine and cling to each other irreversibly. This results in a fabric that retains the natural properties of virgin wool but is denser and more robust than the initial knit. Even small droplets of water cannot penetrate the felted fibers. Just like water, dust or dirt simply "bead" on its surface, which is both water-repellent and breathable. Wool fibers are highly elastic, and the felted knit retains this quality due to its knitted construction.
