This ESR strain sensor allows for the measurement of deformations on mechanical structures and enhances the monitoring of industrial production structures such as bridges, cranes, and wind turbines (Leine&Linde being particularly specialized in this application area) and in the steel industry. The principle of the ESR strain sensor is based on measuring the elongation of an internal sensitive element coupled with an electro-optical angular encoder, which integrates the signal conversion. In this way, the measurement signal contains extremely low noise even with long cable lengths. This measurement method is contactless. As materials are subjected to expansion at certain temperatures, the ESR strain sensor is consequently equipped with a temperature sensor to correct measurement errors. The sensor is insensitive to transverse stresses.
