Vortex Flow Sensors

Derived from the Kármán phenomenon of vortex shedding, the measurement principle is based on the fact that vortices are shed from a cylindrical obstacle in a flow. The vortex shedding frequency is a measure of the flow velocity. The flow vortices are detected using ultrasound. This allows for the measurement of flow velocities starting from 0.5 m/s, with a wide measurement range compared to other detection methods. The flow vortices modulate the ultrasound beam between an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. The demodulation yields the vortex shedding frequency. A key advantage of this measurement principle is its independence from the density, pressure, and temperature of the measuring medium. Vortex flow sensors VA have no moving parts, making them exceptionally durable even under harsh conditions, highly repeatable, long-term stable, and overload safe. The measurement acquisition is free of inertia.
