Invar 36 is also known as Nilo alloy 36, Permalloy, Vacodil 36, has the material number 1.3912, and is subject to the American standard ASTM B753. Invar is a nickel-iron alloy containing 36% nickel (the rest is iron). The advantage of Invar is its very low thermal expansion at temperatures ranging from -100°C to 200°C, which is only one-tenth that of conventional steel. Therefore, Invar is primarily used in areas where expansion due to heat input is undesirable. Common applications for Alloy 36, Vacodil include laser technology, high-precision engineering, aerospace, and measuring instruments. By combining Invar 36 with a material that has a high thermal expansion, a thermomechanical control switch can be realized through the different movements.
