Hardening, Heat Treatments Salt Bath Hardening, Ziegler AG has fully automated the salt bath hardening process with the construction of its new hardening facility in 2019. This automation, combined with years of expertise in salt bath technology, leads to consistent hardness results. Salt melting offers various advantages that other heat treatment methods do not provide. First and foremost is the uniformity of temperature. In salt bath heat treatment, heat is not transferred through radiation and convection as in atmospheric processes (gas and vacuum), but rather through conduction via the contact of the molten medium with the surface of the component. This allows heat to be supplied to or removed from the workpiece very quickly. The heat treatment in salt melts is carried out swiftly and, due to the uniform heat transfer, results in minimal distortion.
