A decanter can be considered as a sedimentation basin that wraps around an axis. In the sedimentation basin, the heavier solid particles of the liquid move downwards due to gravity and form a sediment at the bottom of the basin. In the rotating drum of the centrifuge, the heavier solid particles of the liquid move outward due to centrifugal force and form a sediment on the inner wall of the centrifuge drum. Since a centrifuge experiences forces of about 3000 g, compared to 1 g in the gravitational field, the separation of solid particles from the liquid is much faster and more efficient.
