Gray Cast Iron (EN-GJL) - High wear resistance with good damping properties

Gray cast iron is the most commonly used iron-carbon alloy. What makes it so special is its high wear resistance and good castability. Additionally, the material is particularly easy to process and dampens mechanical vibrations exceptionally well. The reasons for these physical properties can be found in the structure of the cast iron: The carbon in gray cast iron is present in the form of lamellae, which form three-dimensional branches. However, this lamellar graphite also results in very low ductility of the material.
