Palm Oil - Raw Materials

Palm oil is a necessary ingredient in our industry. Necessary and irreplaceable, even. Because contrary to popular belief, it is a relatively balanced product... but to explain this, it is important to take a step back. Originally, and until the 1990s, margarines were produced using animal fats, primarily beef and lard (pork fat). These fats provided a solid structure to the margarine. Following the "mad cow" crisis and more recently the dioxin crisis, animal fats were removed from margarine production due to their association with food safety risks in the minds of many consumers. Additionally, the strong taste of these animal fats sometimes led to certain unpleasant flavor experiences. To replace these undesirable animal fats as effectively as possible, hydrogenated vegetable fats emerged.
